On-line TanachCOURSE DESCRIPTION
REQUIREMENTS
Students must bring to every class a pocket Tanach and a
COMPLETE Sefer Bireishit with Meforshim. Students will not be admitted without these
books.
Students will write tests following each major topic in the syllabus (see below).
A general introduction to the five Megillot. We will do some basic work on authorship , and well as their use in modern liturgy, and their placement in the larger Tanach
We will demonstrate the unity of the book, as well as explore the seeming contradictions in the book itself. We will focus on the question: How did Rabbinic Judaism accept such a difficult work, and what get we get out of it today.
Sub-unit A: A focus on the difficulty of placing this love story in Tanach
Sub-unit B: Students will learn how to read and understand biblical poetry, and understand images as well as their deeper meaning
Sub-unit C: We will look at a few examples of exegesis of the Song in Jewish tradition, including the literal approach, the historic approaches, and the spiritual/philosophical approaches.
