Verse 1 Καὶ ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν ἐπὶ δυσμῶν Μωαβ παρὰ τὸν Ιορδάνην κατὰ Ιεριχω λέγων
And the Lord spoke to Moses to the west of Moab by the Jordan near Jericho, saying,
Verse 2 Σύνταξον τοῖς υἱοῖς Ισραηλ καὶ δώσουσιν τοῖς Λευίταις ἀπὸ τῶν κλήρων κατασχέσεως αὐτῶν πόλεις κατοικεῖν καὶ τὰ προάστεια τῶν πόλεων κύκλω αὐτῶν δώσουσιν τοῖς Λευίταις
Give orders to the children of Israel, and they shall give to the Levites cities to dwell in from the lot of their possession, and they shall give to the Levites the suburbs of the cities round about them.
Verse 3 Καὶ ἔσονται αὐτοῖς αἱ πόλεις κατοικεῖν καὶ τὰ ἀφορίσματα αὐτῶν ἔσται τοῖς κτήνεσιν αὐτῶν καὶ πᾶσι τοῖς τετράποσιν αὐτῶν
And the cities shall be for them to dwell in, and their enclosures shall be for their cattle and all their beasts.
Verse 4 Καὶ τὰ συγκυροῦντα τῶν πόλεων ἃς δώσετε τοῖς Λευίταις ἀπὸ τείχους τῆς πόλεως καὶ ἔξω δισχιλίους πήχεις κύκλω
And the suburbs of the cities which you shall give to the Levites, shall be from the wall of the city and outwards two thousand cubits round about.
Verse 5 Καὶ μετρήσεις ἔξω τῆς πόλεως τὸ κλίτος τὸ πρὸς ἀνατολὰς δισχιλίους πήχεις καὶ τὸ κλίτος τὸ πρὸς λίβα δισχιλίους πήχεις καὶ τὸ κλίτος τὸ πρὸς θάλασσαν δισχιλίους πήχεις καὶ τὸ κλίτος τὸ πρὸς βορρᾶν δισχιλίους πήχεις καὶ πόλις μέσον τούτου ἔσται ὑμῖν καὶ τὰ ὅμορα τῶν πόλεων
And you shall measure outside the city on the east side two thousand cubits, and on the south side two thousand cubits, and on the west side two thousand cubits, and on the north side two thousand cubits; and your city shall be in the midst of this, and the suburbs of the cities [as described].
Verse 6 Καὶ τὰς πόλεις δώσετε τοῖς Λευίταις τὰς ἓξ πόλεις τῶν φυγαδευτηρίων ἃς δώσετε φεύγειν ἐκεῖ τω φονεύσαντι καὶ πρὸς ταύταις τεσσαράκοντα καὶ δύο πόλεις
And you shall give the cities to the Levites, the six cities of refuge which you shall give for the manslayer to flee there, and in addition to these, forty-two cities.
Verse 7 Πάσας τὰς πόλεις δώσετε τοῖς Λευίταις τεσσαράκοντα καὶ ὀκτὼ πόλεις ταύτας καὶ τὰ προάστεια αὐτῶν
You shall give to the Levites in all forty-eight cities, them and their suburbs.
Verse 8 Καὶ τὰς πόλεις ἃς δώσετε ἀπὸ τῆς κατασχέσεως υἱῶν Ισραηλ ἀπὸ τῶν τὰ πολλὰ πολλὰ καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν ἐλαττόνων ἐλάττω ἕκαστος κατὰ τὴν κληρονομίαν αὐτοῦ ἣν κληρονομήσουσιν δώσουσιν ἀπὸ τῶν πόλεων τοῖς Λευίταις
And as for the cities which you shall give out of the possession of the children of Israel, from those [that have] much [you shall give] much, and from those that have less you shall give less: they shall give of their cities to the Levites each one according to his inheritance which they shall inherit.
Verse 9 Καὶ ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν λέγων
And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
Verse 10 Λάλησον τοῖς υἱοῖς Ισραηλ καὶ ἐρεῖς πρὸς αὐτούς ὑμεῖς διαβαίνετε τὸν Ιορδάνην εἰς γῆν Χανααν
Speak to the children of Israel, and you shall say to them, You are to cross over the Jordan into the land of Canaan.
Verse 11 Καὶ διαστελεῖτε ὑμῖν αὐτοῖς πόλεις φυγαδευτήρια ἔσται ὑμῖν φυγεῖν ἐκεῖ τὸν φονευτήν πᾶς πατάξας ψυχὴν ἀκουσίως
And you shall appoint to yourselves cities: they shall be to you cities of refuge for the manslayer to flee to, everyone who has killed another unintentionally.
Verse 12 Καὶ ἔσονται αἱ πόλεις ὑμῖν φυγαδευτήρια ἀπὸ ἀγχιστεύοντος τὸ αἱμα καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀποθάνῃ φονεύων ἕως ἂν στη ἔναντι τῆς συναγωγῆς εἰς κρίσιν
And the cities shall be to you places of refuge from the avenger of blood, and the manslayer shall not die until he stands before the congregation for judgment.
Verse 13 Καὶ αἱ πόλεις ἃς δώσετε τὰς ἓξ πόλεις φυγαδευτήρια ἔσονται ὑμῖν
And the cities which you shall assign, [even] the six cities, shall be places of refuge for you.
Verse 14 Τὰς τρεῖς πόλεις δώσετε ἐν τω πέραν τοῦ Ιορδάνου καὶ τὰς τρεῖς πόλεις δώσετε ἐν γη Χανααν
You shall assign three cities on the other side of the Jordan, and you shall assign three cities in the land of Canaan.
Verse 15 Φυγάδιον ἔσται τοῖς υἱοῖς Ισραηλ καὶ τω προσηλύτω καὶ τω παροίκω τω ἐν ὑμῖν ἔσονται αἱ πόλεις αὑται εἰς φυγαδευτήριον φυγεῖν ἐκεῖ παντὶ πατάξαντι ψυχὴν ἀκουσίως
It shall be a place of refuge for the children of Israel, and for the stranger, and for him that sojourns among you; these cities shall be for a place of refuge, for everyone to flee there who has killed a man unintentionally.
Verse 16 Ἐὰν δὲ ἐν σκεύει σιδήρου πατάξῃ αὐτόν καὶ τελευτήσῃ φονευτής ἐστιν θανάτω θανατούσθω φονευτής
And if he should strike him with an iron instrument, and the man should die, he is a murderer; let the murderer by all means be put to death.
Verse 17 Ἐὰν δὲ ἐν λίθω ἐκ χειρός ἐν ἀποθανεῖται ἐν αὐτω πατάξῃ αὐτόν καὶ ἀποθάνῃ φονευτής ἐστιν θανάτω θανατούσθω φονευτής
And if he should strike him with a stone [thrown] from his hand, whereby a man may die, and he [thus] dies, he is a murderer; let the murderer by all means be put to death.
Verse 18 Ἐὰν δὲ ἐν σκεύει ξυλίνω ἐκ χειρός ἐξ οὑ ἀποθανεῖται ἐν αὐτω πατάξῃ αὐτόν καὶ ἀποθάνῃ φονευτής ἐστιν θανάτω θανατούσθω φονευτής
And if he should stike him with an instrument of wood from his hand, whereby he may die, and he [thus] dies, he is a murderer; let the murderer by all means be put to death.
Verse 19 ἀγχιστεύων τὸ αἱμα οὑτος ἀποκτενεῖ τὸν φονεύσαντα ὅταν συναντήσῃ αὐτω οὑτος ἀποκτενεῖ αὐτόν
The avenger of blood himself shall slay the murderer: whenever he shall meet him, he shall put him to death.
Verse 20 Ἐὰν δὲ δι ἔχθραν ὤσῃ αὐτὸν καὶ ἐπιρρίψῃ ἐπ αὐτὸν πᾶν σκεῦος ἐξ ἐνέδρου καὶ ἀποθάνῃ
And if he should thrust him, out of hatred, or cast anything upon him from an ambush, and the man should die,
Verse 21 διὰ μῆνιν ἐπάταξεν αὐτὸν τη χειρί καὶ ἀποθάνῃ θανάτω θανατούσθω πατάξας φονευτής ἐστιν θανάτω θανατούσθω φονεύων ἀγχιστεύων τὸ αἱμα ἀποκτενεῖ τὸν φονεύσαντα ἐν τω συναντῆσαι αὐτω
or if he has stricken him with his hand through anger, and the man should die, let the man that struck him be put to death by all means, he is a murderer: let the murderer by all means be put to death; the avenger of blood shall slay the murderer when he meets him.
Verse 22 Ἐὰν δὲ ἐξάπινα οὐ δι ἔχθραν ὤσῃ αὐτὸν ἐπιρρίψῃ ἐπ αὐτὸν πᾶν σκεῦος οὐκ ἐξ ἐνέδρου
But if he should thrust him suddenly, not through enmity, or cast anything upon him, not from an ambush,
Verse 23 παντὶ λίθω ἐν ἀποθανεῖται ἐν αὐτω οὐκ εἰδώς καὶ ἐπιπέσῃ ἐπ αὐτόν καὶ ἀποθάνῃ αὐτὸς δὲ οὐκ ἐχθρὸς αὐτοῦ ἠν οὐδὲ ζητῶν κακοποιῆσαι αὐτόν
or [strike him] with any stone, whereby a man may die, unawares, and it should fall upon him, and he should die, but he was not his enemy, nor sought to hurt him;
Verse 24 Καὶ κρινεῖ συναγωγὴ ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ πατάξαντος καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ ἀγχιστεύοντος τὸ αἱμα κατὰ τὰ κρίματα ταῦτα
then the assembly shall judge between the smiter and the avenger of blood, according to these judgments.
Verse 25 Καὶ ἐξελεῖται συναγωγὴ τὸν φονεύσαντα ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀγχιστεύοντος τὸ αἱμα καὶ ἀποκαταστήσουσιν αὐτὸν συναγωγὴ εἰς τὴν πόλιν τοῦ φυγαδευτηρίου αὐτοῦ οὑ κατέφυγεν καὶ κατοικήσει ἐκεῖ ἕως ἂν ἀποθάνῃ ἱερεὺς μέγας ὃν ἔχρισαν αὐτὸν τω ἐλαίω τω ἁγίω
And the congregation shall rescue the manslayer from the avenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to his city of refuge, where he fled for refuge; and he shall dwell there till the death of the high priest, whom they anointed with the holy oil.
Verse 26 Ἐὰν δὲ ἐξόδω ἐξέλθῃ φονεύσας τὰ ὅρια τῆς πόλεως εἰς ἣν κατέφυγεν ἐκεῖ
But if the manslayer should in any way go out beyond the bounds of the city where he fled for refuge,
Verse 27 Καὶ εὕρῃ αὐτὸν ἀγχιστεύων τὸ αἱμα ἔξω τῶν ὁρίων τῆς πόλεως καταφυγῆς αὐτοῦ καὶ φονεύσῃ ἀγχιστεύων τὸ αἱμα τὸν φονεύσαντα οὐκ ἔνοχός ἐστιν
and the avenger of blood should find him outside the bounds of the city of his refuge, and the avenger of blood should kill the manslayer, he is not guilty.
Verse 28 Ἐν γὰρ τη πόλει τῆς καταφυγῆς κατοικείτω ἕως ἂν ἀποθάνῃ ἱερεὺς μέγας καὶ μετὰ τὸ ἀποθανεῖν τὸν ἱερέα τὸν μέγαν ἐπαναστραφήσεται φονεύσας εἰς τὴν γῆν τῆς κατασχέσεως αὐτοῦ
For he ought to have remained in the city of refuge till the high priest died; and after the death of the high priest the manslayer shall return to the land of his possession.
Verse 29 Καὶ ἔσται ταῦτα ὑμῖν εἰς δικαίωμα κρίματος εἰς τὰς γενεὰς ὑμῶν ἐν πάσαις ταῖς κατοικίαις ὑμῶν
And these things shall be to you for an ordinance of judgment throughout your generations in all your dwellings.
Verse 30 Πᾶς πατάξας ψυχήν διὰ μαρτύρων φονεύσεις τὸν φονεύσαντα καὶ μάρτυς εἱς οὐ μαρτυρήσει ἐπὶ ψυχὴν ἀποθανεῖν
Whoever kills a man, you shall slay the murderer on the testimony of witnesses; and one witness shall not testify against a soul that he should die.
Verse 31 Καὶ οὐ λήμψεσθε λύτρα περὶ ψυχῆς παρὰ τοῦ φονεύσαντος τοῦ ἐνόχου ὄντος ἀναιρεθῆναι θανάτω γὰρ θανατωθήσεται
And you shall not accept ransoms for life from a murderer who is worthy of death, for he shall be surely put to death.
Verse 32 Οὐ λήμψεσθε λύτρα τοῦ φυγεῖν εἰς πόλιν τῶν φυγαδευτηρίων τοῦ πάλιν κατοικεῖν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἕως ἂν ἀποθάνῃ ἱερεὺς μέγας
You shall not accept a ransom [to excuse] his fleeing to the city of refuge, so that he should again dwell in the land, until the death of the high priest.
Verse 33 Καὶ οὐ μὴ φονοκτονήσητε τὴν γῆν εἰς ἣν ὑμεῖς κατοικεῖτε τὸ γὰρ αἱμα τοῦτο φονοκτονεῖ τὴν γῆν καὶ οὐκ ἐξιλασθήσεται γῆ ἀπὸ τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ ἐκχυθέντος ἐπ αὐτῆς ἀλλ ἐπὶ τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ ἐκχέοντος
So shall you not pollute with murder the land in which you dwell; for this blood pollutes the land, and the land shall not be purged from the blood shed upon it, but by the blood of him that shed it.
Verse 34 Καὶ οὐ μιανεῖτε τὴν γῆν ἐφ ἡς κατοικεῖτε ἐπ αὐτῆς ἐφ ἡς ἐγὼ κατασκηνώσω ἐν ὑμῖν ἐγὼ γάρ εἰμι κύριος κατασκηνῶν ἐν μέσω τῶν υἱῶν Ισραηλ
And you shall not defile the land on which you dwell, on which I dwell in the midst of you; for I am the Lord dwelling in the midst of the children of Israel.
